Nowadays, mobile phone games and mobile games are mostly associated with stamina bars and microtransactions. The numerous ports of PC games, on the other hand, are a little less known: What you once gambled on your desktop PC in your home, you can now play on your mobile phone instead of Snake and Tetris.
Not all of the implementations are official and can be found in the AppStore or on Google Play. In this list we introduce you to 39 ports of PC games for your smartphone, explain the differences to the PC version, and indicate how well the titles can be controlled with the touchscreen.
Which controller is suitable? With mobile games, you are not always tied to the touch controls. Many games also support a controller. There are numerous designs. Not only can you connect a standard DS4 or Xbox controller, for example, but there are also copies online with a smartphone holder. We recommend that you look for “telescopic controllers” . Then your mobile phone becomes a kind of self-made Nintendo Switch brand.

The port: With Limbo you don’t have to accept any deductions. The game is completely identical to the console version released in 2010, which has also been available on the PC since 2011.

Port: Spelunky Classic HD is based on the game’s source code, which was once published in a Humble Weekly Bundle. So it is not identical to version 1.1 of the title.
The controls work so well: On Android, the game presents you with a virtual controller, which requires quite a bit of getting used to and is less accurate compared to its hardware counterparts.

The port: On the smartphone there are mainly prints in terms of graphics, but otherwise it is a complete implementation of the PC and console game. Any future DLCs will be added as microtransactions.
The control works so well: A virtual controller is used for the control. This can lead to problems in real-time battles, as precision is very important in titles like Bloodstained. 35. Company of Heroes
Genre: Real-time strategy

The port: You get a 1: 1 implementation of the game on your smartphone, with offline battles and the entire campaign. but have to do without the multiplayer mode. The DLCs are not currently available on mobile devices either.

Five years after the events of the predecessor, you must be the last Jedi to escape the Sith and reconnect with the Force. In the course of this journey, you will gather a group around you, typical for role-playing games, and make numerous decisions that will lead you either to the dark or light side of the force.
The port: The smartphone port to Kotor 2 was confirmed in 2015 by an ESRB leak. In 2018, the developer Aspyr again declared that they had no timely plans. In 2020 he suddenly appeared. It is the complete game known from the PC and is also modifiable. Accordingly, you can also restore the edited content of the title with the TSLCRM mod.
The controls work so well: Like Kotor 1, Kotor 2 can for the most part be played very comfortably with the touch controls. This is possible precisely because the fights have a pause function and any incorrect clicks are no longer problematic.
33. Diablo
Genre: Action RPG
Platforms:Android ( Store )
Price: Free
Miscellaneous:Requires the files of the original PC version ( GOG )
That’s what Diablo is about: No, we’re not talking about Diablo Immortal, which is developed by Blizzard itself, but the classic from 1997. This is an old-school hack-and-slay RPG. In Diablo, you end up in the city of Tristram as a warrior, archer or magician. It is your task to explore the church and its underground in order to finally defeat the devil personally.
The port: The implementation is a so-called source port for fans. This means that you need the original files of the PC version to play. The project called DevilutionX not only brings the game to Android, but it also adds small new features and fixes bugs in the classic.
The controls work so well: You can control the game once with a touch control, but you can also connect a controller. The former works rather badly than right, which is why we definitely recommend using a controller.

And by the way, you explore a very nicely designed, anime-style open world.
The Port: Genshin Impact is a little different from the other titles on this list. Because the Android and PC versions appeared at the same time, but also officially offer crossplay and cross-progression. Another difference is that it is the only title on this list that includes microtransactions. With the purchase of loot boxes, you get new characters or weapons.

Genre: Ego shooter
Platforms:Android ( Github )
Price: Free
Miscellaneous:Requires the files from the original PC version ( Steam )
That’s what Half-Life is about: You take on the role of physicist Gordon Freeman, who has to use all kinds of gun violence to defend himself against aliens and government soldiers after a laboratory accident. While you fight yourselves at the beginning on earth, the last chapters lead you into the extraterrestrial world Xen.
The port: While you can now play the full half-life remake Black Mesa on your PC, there is at least a port for the classic original in the form of Xash3D for Android smartphones. This is an engine that you can feed with the original files of the classic source games. In addition to Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6 also runs. Both not only in single-player but also in multiplayer.
The controls work so well: Half-Life encounters the same problem on smartphones as all shooters: With the touch controls, it can sometimes be quite difficult to execute precise movements and, above all, to hit your enemies. Alternatively, you can use a controller.
29. Dead cells
Genre: Jump & Run
Platforms:Android ( Store ), iOS ( Store )
Price: 9.99 dollars
This is what Dead Cells is about : The title is a roguelite indie hit with Metroidvania gameplay and randomly generated levels. So you have to start all over again after each death, but keep unlocks such as skills that give you access to new areas. With a total of five levels of difficulty, it can be really difficult.
The port: The developer Evil Empire ported the game independently to iOS in 2019. An Android version followed in 2020. There is no saving in content and the game is just as extensive as on the PC. However, it is based on an older version. The developer plans to submit the missing content and DLCs by 2021.
The controls work this well: Dead Cells uses a fairly standard layout for its controls. On the left side you have a virtual stick, but you can find skills on the right side of the screen. The game tries to help you out a little by always automatically launching an attack in the vicinity of an enemy. Alternatively, you can also use a hardware controller.

The port: The port comes from the 11 bit studios themselves and appeared only a few months after the release of the Windows versions. The game has the same content as the PC and console version. However, some DLCs are missing for the mobile devices.
The controls work so well: You can simply click on certain objects in the game world directly on your smartphone, and your character will automatically find its way. As a result, the game works quite easily even with the touch controls.

The port: Banner Saga is an official port of the PC version. For you this means that you have the option to manually move your savegame between the smartphone and the PC. A little technical knowledge is required for this, however, as there is no automatic cross-save function. If you haven’t had enough after part 1, you can also find the second part for Android and iOS.
The controls work so well: Instead of clicking with the mouse, you click with your finger. The turn-based fights can be operated properly and the dialog selection works flawlessly. Sometimes, however, your inputs are not recognized directly in the fights, so you sometimes have to struggle with the operation. Since the game does not run in real time, it does not prevent you from progressing in the game.

The Port: For years, technology enthusiasts have been trying to get Doom to work on all kinds of devices. And what runs on the TouchBar of a MacBook Pro or an oscilloscope can also be played on Android without any problems thanks to a technically savvy fan. In addition to the original Doom, you can load any MegaWAD file into the engine. In the meantime, Bethesda has officially released the old Doom titles for smartphones, which means that iOS users can also play it.
The controls work so well: You move around and aim with two virtual joysticks on the left and right edges of the smartphone. With further onscreen buttons, you fire your weapon and use switches. The weapon selection is on a radial menu. Functional is probably the most appropriate name for the controller. Because the game is fast and the touch controls are therefore imprecise. The gameplay is based on that of Doom: You search levels for switches or keys and shoot your way through many, many hordes of opponents to get to the exit.
The port: The same developer who brought Doom to Android also ported Quake’s 3D engine. Nice side effect: Since Hexen 2 runs with the same engine, you can also play the dark fantasy shooter from Raven Software.
The controls work so well: You control your character and the crosshairs with two virtual joysticks. Other actions such as shooting and jumping are distributed on additional onscreen buttons. Playing one of the fastest shooters out there is a bit of a hassle. The most disturbing point is that in the absence of a third hand, you have to decide whether to look around or shoot. So you won’t be able to do great rocket jumps here.

Instead of cancer and co. You heal ailments like bloatedness, Frankenstones and broken hearts.
The port: CorsixTH is a new implementation of the theme hospital engine. In addition to Windows, the project is also available for Android. Its goal is not only to eliminate the mistakes of the original, but also to expand its features. These include a higher maximum resolution and new features. The current version of Android is from 2016. The PC version of CorsixTH, on the other hand, was only updated this month.
How well does the controls work? Control is likely to be the port’s biggest problem. Rotating objects and building spaces can sometimes turn into work. Misplacement is the order of the day. Constructing rooms in particular turns out to be annoying because you can no longer scroll in build mode. Those who do not place too much emphasis on the exact positioning of space and objects or who have no problem with frequent corrections will still be happy.

When it comes to graphics, you also have to accept a few deductions such as poorer textures on mobile devices.
The controls work this well: As with most turn-based games, the controls in XCOM: Enemy Within work almost better with the touchpad than with a standard mouse. So that you don’t click wrong, you confirm each command with a click of a button. This makes tacting fun even on the phone.

The controls work this well: Moving and looking around works in Fortnite by default via a virtual controller. When shooting, you can choose one of three fire modes: classic shooting via the overlay button, a double tap, or an automatic function that fires as soon as your crosshair is near an enemy. None of these functions match a mouse and each has its own disadvantages. For the Battle Royale fun on the go, you can live with these compromises.

This happens once via the turn-based world map, on which you command agents and spies, expand cities, train units and move your troops. If your armies eventually encounter an enemy, you have to prove your skills as a real-time general. Troop positioning and flank maneuvers are important here.
The port: The implementation is exclusively about the main program of the strategy game from 2004. There are now the two addons Barbarian Invasion and Alexander for iOS and Android.
The controls work so well: Thanks to the real-time battles that can be paused at any time, you have all the time in the world to give orders to your units. This helps especially when getting used to the complex controls. Simple movement and attack commands are still easy to handle, but for more advanced tactics you should have internalized the meanings of the overlay buttons. Controlling the camera can also be a bit frustrating at times.
