You don’t want to spend money on games? No problem: The Nintendo Switch also has a lot to offer in the Free2Play area: These are the best free games.

These are the best free games out now for Nintendo Switch.

GTNews introduces you to the best free Nintendo Switch games. Because if you want to play on the Nintendo Switch, you don’t always have to spend (a lot) money. There are now a number of Free2Play titles for the small Nintendo console that are in no way inferior to the paid titles in terms of quality.

Note: Most of the titles in this list do not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to use multiplayer. Many of the F2P titles listed below also support microtransactions.

1. Dauntless

  • Genre: Action RPG
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (mostly cosmetics)

This is how it plays: The games in the Monster Hunter series are very popular, so it is not surprising that Dauntless is also very well received by enthusiastic monster hunters. The comic F2P role-playing game works on a similar principle and sends us on a hunt for beasts in a post-apocalyptic world.

2. Ninjala

  • Genre: Action, Battle Royale
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (mostly cosmetics)

How it plays: Ninjala is a free multiplayer action game for Nintendo Switch. The title is in the same vein as Splatoon 2 . You fight each other in a Battle Royale arena and you have to try to collect the most points. To do this, you collect items in the level and defeat your enemies with special finishing moves.

Single player chargeable: In addition to the free multiplayer, Ninjala offers a solo campaign for which you have to spend money, however, as it is part of the game’s “premium content”.

3. Tetris 99

  • Genre: Puzzle Battle Royale
  • Switch online necessary? Yes
  • Are there microtransactions? No

This is how it plays: Who says that battle royale games have to take place exclusively in the shooter genre? Without further ado, Nintendo turned the popular classic puzzle into a BR version. In the multiplayer game you compete against 99 other players with the tried and tested Tetris game principle and stack blocks in a race. Whoever is left last wins.

Offline content for a fee: While the main game is free, Nintendo also offers two offline modes as DLCs, for which you have to pay.

4. Pokémon Quest

  • Genre: Action Adventure
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (items)

This is how it plays: In the cuddly single-player action adventure Pokémon Quest , you live in a Pokémon universe that is strongly reminiscent of Minecraft with its blocky look . In the game you take care of your base camp, go on expeditions with your Pokémon, attract new monsters and train them. Your goal is to rid the island of wild Pokémon while collecting as many of them as possible.

5. Warframe

  • Genre: Third-person shooter
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (premium currency for items)

How it plays: Warframe is a multiplayer online shooter with a third person perspective that is playfully reminiscent of Destiny . You shoot your way across the solar system and fight against monsters and clones. You collect loot and experience points, learn numerous skills and improve your weapons. There are also different classes in the form of biomechanical combat suits – the warframes.

6. Fortnite

  • Genre: Battle Royale Shooter
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (Battle Pass for Cosmetics, Weapons, XP Boosts)

This is how it plays: Fortnite has been THE battle royale whiz of the last few years and has also been at home on the Switch for some time. On the Nintendo console, as on the other platforms, the third-person shooter is regularly supported with content updates and, thanks to new, regular seasons, is always a bit refreshed. The gameplay principle is very simple: 100 players throw themselves on an island, try to be the last to stay alive and thus to carry the “Victory Royale” home.

7. Brawlhalla

  • Genre: Brawler
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (Cosmetics)

Here’s how it plays: As is typical of a brawler, Brawlhalla is about pushing our enemies off platforms. Every fall costs a life, in the end the winner is whoever is last or who has the most points after the time has elapsed. We can play locally and online, both one against the other and against each other in teams of two.

In the Free2Play version, we have the choice between eight figures that rotate weekly, a total of over 40. If you are particularly fond of a character, you don’t have to buy it with real money, you can buy it in the in-game shop Buy missions and level-ups of earned currency.

8. Asphalt 9: Legends

  • Genre: racing game
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (auto blueprints)

This is how it plays: Asphalt 9: Legends is a classic racer in which you can race in single and multiplayer modes. The more races you win, the more cars you can unlock. While we deal with five sections with different races in career mode, we race against other racing enthusiasts in multiplayer mode.

The fans are arguing about whether Asphalt 9 is Pay2Win or not (via Reddit ): You can spend real money here to get coveted auto blueprints for better vehicles faster. You can get these in the game, but then you have to spend a lot of time on the grinding.

9. Fallout Shelter

  • Genre: Management Sim
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (items)

Here’s how it plays: Fallout Shelter is a management sim in the post-apocalyptic universe of the Fallout series, in which everything revolves around the construction and management of an underground vault. Several room variants are available for expansion. We also have to take care of our vaultlings and their needs. It’s a bit like Sims but in 2D.

10. Pokémon Cafe Mix

  • Genre: Puzzle
  • Switch online necessary? No
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (in-game currency, power-ups, item packs, etc.)

13. Paladins: Champions of the Realm

  • Genre: MOBA, Shooter
  • Switch online necessary? No.
  • Are there microtransactions? Yes (buyable champions and cosmetics)

This is how it plays: The MOBA shooter Paladins: Champions of the Realm throws us in 5v5 matches into an arena in which we have to stand up to the other team in typical MOBA manner with tanks, support and flanks. The more balanced we are, the better our chances are. There are currently over 40 different champions.

Crossplay supported: If you play on the Switch or Xbox, you can play together with your friends on the other console.

14. Rocket League

  • Genre: Fun Racer, Soccer
