In an interview with 1 News, Valve’s Gabe Newell spoke about his vision for the future of games. It actually sounds incredible.
Will games soon read our minds?
According to Newell, Valve is currently working on a so-called BCI, a brain-computer interface technology. The software is supposed to allow game developers to interpret the brain signals of players. “We’re working on an open-source project so that anyone can put high-resolution reading technology into headsets,” said Newell. These technologies are designed to read the brain waves of players. This is supposed to go far beyond what other companies have been trying for a long time. Some companies are working on technologies that recognize, for example, when the player is bored and then create more exciting challenges. Or, the player will be frightened when they get tired.
Gabe Newell didn’t want to go into that, but what Valve is currently working on should far exceed this and lead to games that can offer more than reality. Newell said, “You’re used to seeing the world through eyes, but eyes were created by this“ low cost ”company that didn’t care about failure rates and RMAs, and when it broke there was no way they could effectively fix it which makes sense from an evolutionary point of view, but doesn’t match consumer preferences at all. The visual experience, the visual fidelity that we can create – the real world will no longer be the yardstick we use for the best possible visual fidelity. ”
Supposedly, this technology is supposed to be even easier to implement than some might assume. It’s hard to say what such a game might look like then. Are our thoughts being played with? Do we see things that are not there? Something like this might then be the first step towards a possible mind control.
This whole idea is probably still in its infancy and it will certainly take a long time before something like this is ready for the market – if at all.
